A fantastic first season back in the second tier has ended in the disappointment on narrowly missing out on promotion to the Premier League. But in his latest interview on BCFC World Gary Johnson has urged supporters to underline the word ALWAYS in the Adriano Basso mantra ‘Always Believe‘. He believes that we will achieve next season and it is his positive attitude that has driven the clubs success, but now he wants to go that step further.
He sees no reason why we will not be up there again next season challenging, this despite the fact that 15 of the 24 Championship sides next season have former Premier League experience. Football is in a state of flux and there are changes at the top. Hull City have made it to the top flight for the first time in their 104 year history. This leaves Plymouth as the only major city not to have had a football team representing it in the first tier of English football. Reading may have come down but they had a good first season up there. Wigan are still there, and I remember watching them whilst standing on the grass that grew on the terraces at Springfield Park. Stoke City are back there after 23 years in the footballing wilderness. Why not add Bristol City to the list?
Gary suggests that stability is the key. He feels that several clubs will struggle financially next term. Whilst some will attract big investment, many will over invest in an attempt to reach the Promised Land and leave themselves in financial difficulty. He insists that will not happen with Bristol City saying that we are a stable football club. There is a trust between Steve Lansdown (the City Chairman) and Gary Johnson that involves Steve trusting Gary’s judgement and Gary only asking for funding of players he feels he can work with. If Gary Johnson asks for money, Steve Lansdown will invest in the knowledge that Gary has a sound business case to support the investment.
There will be a lot of speculation and most of it will not be true. Gary Johnson maintains that there will be no information leaving Ashton Gate until a player has signed on the dotted line. He wants the club to be cautious about revealing where its interest lies for fear of attracting interest from other clubs, our competitors in particular. He says we have two or three targets that we’ll keep under our hat until or unless they sign.
‘One more step.’ He says, ‘We’ve got to get to that Premiership. But we’ve got to do that within the means of this football club’. He commented that Bristol City have already sold 13 and a half thousand season tickets in a 20 thousand seater stadium. ‘It’s unbelievable!’, says Johnson ……. always believe Gary, we do, we’re Bristol City, we Always Believe.
