Cardiff City failed in their late bid to get something from the game with Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Saturday.

City looked a little nervous on the ball early doors but they were soon calmed when Stephen Pearson got on the end of Jon Stead’s cross to plant the ball home for 1-0 just after the half hour mark.

A couple of minutes later and the scores could have been levelled again but Mark Hudson’s header came back off the crossbar.

But City were looking comfortable at half time when Martyn Woolford raced clear of the Cardiff defence and slotted the ball into the corner of the net.

Ten minutes into the second half and Cardiff were handed a lifeline when Peter Whittingham crossed for Joe Mason to head home.

But City held their nerve and were sitting on a two goal cushion once again when Woolford picked up a ball from substitute Sam Baldock and fired home his second and City’s third.

Heidar Helguson tried to force a Cardiff comeback when he netted a low cross from Kevin McNaughton late on.

But Sam Baldock rounded off a fine debut when he went through and finished nicely from just outside the area to make it 4-2 to Bristol City.
