Bristol City old boys proved that they are the Best in the West by winning the inaugral Screwfix Western Masters held in Cardiff on Sunday 22nd June 2008.

City drew their first game with Cardiff City 2-2 with goals from Sean McCarthy and Marcus Stewart. They then demolished Bristol Rovers 4-0, Martin Kuhl, Clayton Blackmore, Mickey Bell and Gary Owers all scoring. Swansea City were beaten 3-0 with Martin Kuhl scoring twice and another from Clayton Blackmore.

The title was sealed in a final match against Cardiff City which proved a thriller. Cardiff twice pegged back a Bristol City lead. An own goal from Mickey Bell had made the score 2-2, but Rob Edwards got the winner. City’s goals came from Marcus Stewart, Sean McCarthy and Rob Edwards.

Masters players have to be 35 at the start of each Masters season. The Bristol City squad was:

Billy Mercer (1999-2003)
Gary Owers (1994-1998)
Marcus Stewart (2005-2007)
Clayton Blackmore (on loan in 1996)
Martin Kuhl (1994-1997)
Sean McCarthy (on loan in 1998)

Bristol City go through to the Masters Cup Grand Final, usually held in early September. The games are screened live on SkySports.

Bristol Rovers’ Jeff Meacham won the golden boot award scoring four goals, all of them came in the 5-1 demolition of Swansea City.

Bristol City were backed by a vociferous support in Cardiff and according to reports this was the first ‘Masters’ event that had to have a police presence to control the crowd. Thankfully the day passed without any major incident and the City fans crossed back over the Severn bridge happy with their teams efforts.



The Rules


All football games will be played on pitches 60 by 30 metres and surrounded by perimeter boards.

Each match will be eight minutes each way.

Each football team can use a squad of nine players for each game, with a maximum of six on the pitch at any one time. An unlimited number of substitutions can be made by each team at any time during the game.

At least one footballer must be in the opposition’s half at all times or a free-kick will be awarded to the opposition on the halfway line. This rule does not apply to a team which has had a player sent off.

There is no offside.

All free kicks must take place within five seconds or the decision is reversed. The opposition must be five metres away at free kicks.

No minor injuries will be treated on the pitch. The clock will only be stopped for serious injury or time wasting.

Sin bin will be used in an unofficial capacity for yellow card offences. The referee will suggest the player leaves the pitch for two minutes.

Any player who receives a red card will be sent off immediately, cannot be replaced and will be banned for the next match. In the most extreme of cases, players will be banned from playing Masters football indefinately.
