Bristol City surprised Championship leaders Watford with an injury time winner from substitute Darren Byfield at Vicarage Road to come away with a deserved three points.

Watford goalkeeper Mart Poom had already denied Ivan Sproule twice and Enoch Showunmi had hit the post before Adriano Basso turned Marlon King’s cross onto the post then saved from Jobi McAnuff. Showunmi looked as though he had won the game for Bristol City only for John O’Toole to equalise three minutes from time. With a draw then looking likely having just come on Byfield volleyed home the injury time winner.

As Gary Johnson said he was delighted with the win that he felt they deserved and Byfield did exactly as he had told him to: “We certainly were going for it at the end and I said to Darren just as he went on ‘you’ll get one chance, be ready for it’.

“We played some good stuff in the first half and had three or four good chances. It was a great game, two different styles. We had to compete with them and play our game.

“It’s a massive boost to beat Watford on their own territory and it’s what the lads deserved.”

Bristol City face fellow play-off hopefuls Ipswich at Ashton gate on Tuesday night.
