Bristol City are at Ipswich Town on Saturday and another who will be there is referee for the game, Peter Bankes.

Bankes completed his first full season in charge of league games last term and in fact he was the referee who took charge of City’s 2-0 win at Chesterfield.

Two Chesterfield players, Sam Morsey and Gary Roberts received yellow cards that day, as did City’s Wade Elliott.

Last season Bankes took charge of 27 games and during that time he showed the yellow card 98 times and the red card seven. In fact there was just one game last season that Bankes never showed a card in, that was a 2-2 draw between Colchester and Scunthorpe in the middle of April.

This season the card happy referee has managed to show 39 yellow cards in just nine games, including nine on the first day of the season when he took charge of Birmingham v Reading, so he is well on track to beat last season’s tally.

Bankes’ assistants for Saturday’s game will be Michael Webb and Nick Hobbis, while the fourth official will be fellow yellow card enthusiast, Gavin Ward.
