Bristol City claimed back-to-back wins for only the second time this season to put daylight between the relegation zone with a 2-0 win over struggling Scunthorpe.

Boss Keith Millen chose to stick faith with the same team that went to Watford and won 3-1 in midweek, meaning Nicky Maynard was handed his first Ashton Gate start of the season.

The Robins flew out of the traps early on and David Clarkson was unlucky not to open the scoring in the first minute, when the Scot narrowly failed to connect with Albert Adomah’s right-wing cross.

City went close again following good work from Liam Fontaine and Adomah, before Clarkson opened the scoring in bizarre fashion on 13 minutes.

There appeared to be no danger when former Iron winger Martyn Woolford tapped the ball back to Clarkson on the left edge of the box, but the Scot’s evaded everyone before nestling inside the far post.

Clarkson then had a low 25-yard effort beaten away by Scunny ‘keeper Josh Lillis, but the Iron offered nothing in return.

So it came as no surprise when Nicky Maynard doubled City’s advantage four minutes after the interval.

Woolford’s low corner fooled his old employers and Maynard reacted quickest to pick his spot from ten yards out on 49.

Maynard then went clean through on goal only to blaze over the top, before Clarkson dispossessed Iron centre-back Michael Nelson only to finish tamely.

The Iron offered nothing as an attacking force throughout and Fontaine saw his header scrambled off the line late on.

CITY (4-4-2): James; Carey, Caulker (Stewart ’14), Fontaine, Nyatanga; Adomah (Campbell-Ryce ’46), Elliott, Cisse, Woolford; Maynard (Keogh ’85), Clarkson.

SCUNTHORPE (4-4-2): Lillis; A. Wright, Nelson, Reid (Raynes ’27), Gordon; J. Wright, Togwell, Hughes, Duffy (Ibrahim ’59); Miller (Grant ’66) Garner.

REFEREE: Simon Hooper (Wiltshire)
