Bristol City could not build on their victory in midweek after being held at home to a 0-0 draw with Portsmouth.

Neither side created a bunch of chances although City had a goal disallowed and Pompey could have nicked it right at the death.

Early on in the game Albert Adomah linked up well with Marvin Elliott, but his shot was well saved by Jamie Ashdown in the Portsmouth goal.

City were looking the more likely of the two to score in the early part of the game, but they could not make the possession they had count in front of goal.

The visitors had their first chance on 16 minutes when Greg Halford found himself with a shooting chance, but his effort from 30 yards did not trouble Dean Gerken as the ball flew over the bar.

James Wilson managed to get in a block to thwart David Norris after he had linked up well with Hayden Mullins to create the chance in the first place. Soon after that Dave Kitson wasted a chance when he headed the ball over the bar.

In the second half Jordan Spence had to make a decent block to stop a Kitson effort that was set up because of the good work by Kanu. Then Lawrence was allowed to fire in a shot from 25 yards but Gerken saw it all the way and made a decent save.

The same player forced Gerken into another save when he headed the ball on target, but straight at the keeper.
At the other end, Kilkenny had the chance to open his account for the club, but the shot he fired in from 20 yards had the keeper beaten, but was just off target.

And it was Kilkenny who finally had the ball in the back of the net, but his goal was chalked off for a foul on the keeper.

On 73 minutes Varney came close to winning it for the visitors when he curled a shot in from the edge of the area only to see his effort hit the upright. Kitson then had another chance but this time he somehow got the ball over the bar from just six yards out.

Sub Martyn Woolford was sent free by Nicky Maynard but he fired a shot straight at the grateful Ashdown.
