Wade Elliott struck in the second half of this season opener and gave City their first win of the new term at the first attempt.

There were also goals for the new boys in each side, Aaron Wilbraham and Michael Higdon both grabbing a goal each to send the sides in for the half time break level.

City settled down the quicker of the two sides and were in charge for the opening stages, and that saw them rewarded with a goal on 20 minutes.

Mark Little picked up the ball and headed off down the right, he reached the byline and cut the ball back for Wilbraham who’s header was too powerful for the United keeper to keep out.

United then hit back at City and their pressure brought their reward 12 minutes later.

Aiden Flint was then on hand to clear the ball off the line to stop United from drawing level soon after losing the lead.

Then the Blades won a free kick on the right which Ben Davies swung over and Higdon rose the highest to glance the ball into the far corner.

The winner came for City when Wilbraham flicked a ball with his heel over a defender and Wade Elliott who ran onto the ball, held off his man and then planted the ball into the corner of the net, giving the onrushing Howard no chance.

Nigel Clough`s hosts came close to snatching an equaliser late on as Jamie Murphy smashed in a close range shot that Fielding got a strong hand to and the ball hit the post before being cleared off the line.
