End of Season Awards

Ever popular Brazilian Adriano Basso has rightly been named Player of the Year. He became known last season for his ‘Always Believe’ mantra. And it is his strength from on high (he is often seen pointing skywards in prayer before a match) that has seen him keep 15 clean sheets this season and earn many plaudits from within the game. His name was being chanted long before the award was announced.

Young Player of the Year is Marvin “Marvellous” Elliott. He was as humble as Basso in accepting the award and thanked his goalkeeper for the positivity and support in a tough first move away from London. He has scored 6 goals, 2 more than in all of his four seasons at Millwall, but it is his tough tackling and athleticism in central midfield that have earnt him this award. Interestingly though, City have won every game he has scored in so I am hoping for a couple or three more in the Play Offs.

Top Goalscorer went to Darren Byfield with what must be the lowest total ever to he been honoured at Ashton Gate. Just 8 goals won Darren the award and he has not scored for the club since New Years Day. Ironic then that Bristol City, who have John Atyeo sitting proudly in third place in the all time top flight goalscorers chart with 316 goals, may return to the top flight with one of the worst records in front of goal of any promoted team having finished the season with a goal difference of + just 1.

Champagne Moment was awarded to last seasons Player of the Year Jamie McCombe for his spectacular overhead kick winner against Hull City back in March. It was spectacular for a 6 foot 5 inch central defender, that is for sure. Another against Hull City at Wembley will be the champagne moment all Bristol City fans are dreaming of, but in reality we hope that he can keep out an aerial bombardment from Neil Warnock’s Crystal Palace.

The players voted Ivy Haines as their Fan of the Year. Ivy is 105 and has been a season ticket holder at Ashton Gate for the last 60 years. She can be seen photographed with the Wurzels by a BBC photographer if you click here.

The event was held in the Dolman Exhibition Hall at Ashton Gate and sponsored by Origins United. The awards were presented by Club President Marina Dolman.
