Gustav Engvall is now back with Bristol City following his loan at Djurgarden.

The Swedish forward, who scored seven goals in his 13 game spell, is now keen to impress Lee Johnson in Tenerife as he bids to force himself into the boss’ first team plans for the coming season.

With Matty Taylor, Milan Djuric and Aaron Wilbraham injured it has left Johnson using Bobby Reid, who has scored plenty of goals, as a second striker alongside record signing Famara Diedhiou and young forward Freddie Hinds.

Engvall has told the Official Website he’s aware those injury could have opened the door and he’s out to take that chance.

‘There are a lot of injuries at the moment and maybe that could mean an opening into the team for me. I’m glad to be back, to see all the lads again. Every footballer wants to play. I will keep trying to do my best here and hopefully the chance will come.’

Adding: It doesn’t take one day to learn everything. I feel like I know the team, the lads and how Bristol City play. I’m 21 years old from Sweden but I feel good now and I want to play. We have good strikers in the team and it’s up to me to do my best in training to show the manager what I can do.’

It had been suggested Engvall wanted to return to Djurgarden for the remainder of the Swedish season but the forward has said the temporary spell has worked as planned as it allowed him to play football, score goals and get into Sweden’s U21 squad for the European Championships.

‘One of the key parts of going on loan was to get games and show the manager what I can do. It got me to the Euros, where I played in the first two games. I’m glad to have had that opportunity.’

Admitting the Euros ‘didn’t work out as planned’, holders Sweden went out in the group stages, Engvall insists he’s focused on playing for Bristol City as much as possible this season, which could be achieved by working hard with the squad in Tenerife.

‘It’s been good to be playing games and my confidence is high. It’s good for me coming back here with that confidence. I want to help the team and get more minutes than last year. I’ll chat through things with the gaffer soon. I’m glad to be here in Tenerife with the squad and I’m only focused on this trip and trying to do my best.’
