Gustav Engvall played a cameo role for Bristol City last time round but the Swedish forward is feeling confident heading into the Championship season and hopes to play a prominent part for City.

Having arrived from Gothenburg last summer he was limited to just six first team appearances for Bristol City and returned to his homeland for a loan with Djurgardens.

It had always been Lee Johnson’s plan, certainly hope, some regular football would bring some goals and build up Engvall’s confidence, which is exactly what happened as he bagged seven of them to force himself into Sweden’s U21 squad for the European Championships.

Engvall marked his return with a brace against Cheltenham in midweek and he’s told the Official Website he was delighted to show the fans (in England) what he could do.

‘It was a long time ago that I played in front of the City supporters (in England). I was very pleased to score two goals.’

On his goals he added: ‘I felt like I took my chance. It was a great ball from Joe (Morrell) for my first goal and I got a good touch on it to get past the keeper and score. For the second, it was a good header from Callum (O’Dowda) and I actually thought the keeper would save it but I was ready at the back post.’

With confidence restored and the Championship season upon us Engvall, rightly so, feels he took the chance Johnson gave him at Whaddon Road and wants to translate that form and confidence into goals for Bristol City this season.

He can’t wait to get started and insisted his fitness levels are sky high too.

‘I`m feeling confident from my time in Sweden on loan with the goals I scored and now I want to take that into English football. I`m just excited for the start of the season now. It`s less than two weeks away and I can`t wait to get started. I feel good; I can run for ages! I`m pleased my fitness is good.’
