Former Bristol City goalkeeper Stephen Henderson has finally completed his move to Portsmouth.
The 23-year-old turned down the offer of a new contract at Ashton Gate and left the West Country when his deal expired last week.
And after spending the week training with Steve Cotterill’s side, both clubs finalised a compensation fee allowing the former Irish U21 international to sign a three-year deal with the South Coast club.
“I was at Bristol City for four years and I just never seemed to be given the chance to break into the first-team every year,” Hendo told skysports.com.
“I’m 23 now and I felt that this was my chance to join a club that are on the up and have all the ingredients for success.
“I heard lots of great things about the manager, Steve Cotterill, and spoke with the goalkeeping coach here, John Keeley, as we will be working together on a daily basis and those two were massive factors in me joining Portsmouth.
“It is a bit different because David James was pretty much guaranteed his place at Bristol City, but I’ve come here to play football.”
City chairman Colin Sexstone, who earlier this week struck a similar compensation agreement for Ryan Taylor, was equally happy with the move.
“We feel we’ve got fair deals on both players,” Sexstone told the club’s official website.
“As much as possible you look for good value and I believe we’ve managed that.”
