City goalkeeper David James has been handed a new one-year deal, after a renewal clause in his contract was triggered.

The 40-year-old arrived at Ashton Gate from Portsmouth, shortly after the World Cup last summer and made his 31st appearance in the 2-0 home defeat against Leeds last weekend.

But having made his 30th appearance in the 4-0 win at Deepdale the week before, the former England goalie was happy to extend his stay.

“I’m happy that I’ve played the games to have earned another contract,” James told BBC Points West.

“When I came here, there had to be incentives for me to want to carry on playing.

“Having been here for two thirds of a season and, enjoying the experience, I want to continue and improve on that.”
