Maynard returns to training

City striker Nicky Maynard has made his long-awaited return from injury, by stepping up his rehabilitation.

Maynard, 23, has been ruled out since July, after picking up a knee injury, but remains on course to return by Christmas.

And after emerging from his first outdoor session since the summer earlier this week, last season’s 21-goal top scorer was in an optimistic mood.

“It feels great to be back. It’s been a long, hard road with the rehabilitation and this is the next stage for me,” Maynard told the Bristol Evening Post.

“Previously, I have only been able to do light gym work to strengthen the knee and weightless work in the swimming pool.

“Now we are stepping things up. I have been kicking a ball already and now, for the next two or three weeks, I’ll be straight-line running to build my fitness.”

The news will come as a major boost to City fans, who are undoubtedly looking forward to seeing last season’s top scorer paired with Jon Stead in the second half of the season.

“Jon Stead works so hard for the team. There is a lot of pace in the team and we are looking dangerous on the break,” the ex-Crewe hitman added.

“I need to build up my confidence in the knee before I can start doing more.

“I don’t want to put myself under too much pressure but, hopefully, I can be playing some part again by Christmas.”
