Bristol City boss Derek McInnes has no doubts in his mind that referee Andre Marriner was 100 per cent right in disallowing Sheffield Wednesday’s late goal at Hillsborough on Saturday.

With City looking like they were coming away with three points, Wednesday thought they had found an equaliser when Gary Madine’s effort ended up in the back of the net.

Miguel Llera appeared to manhandle the referee as he appealed for a penalty during the build up to the goal; he was booked by the ref before Madine scored so the goal was ruled out.

McInnes told Sky Sports after the game: ‘The ref gives a free-kick prior to the ball going in the net; my players have said they heard a whistle before the ball went into the net.

‘For me the only thing I have seen is the over-reaction of the centre-back grabbing the referee with both hands, it was over-aggressive.

‘You can’t manhandle the referee; he is quite within his rights to give a free-kick, that’s a fact.’
