Bristol City midfielder Stephen Pearson has suffered a blow after hearing the news that he will most likely require surgery on his ankle injury.

Pearson has been suffering with the injury since the start of July which has so far caused him to miss the pre-season games and also the opening game of the season at home to Bradford City on Saturday.

The player is booked in to see a specialist later this week, but boss Sean O’Driscoll fears that an operation is the only way of getting Pearson back into action.

He told the Bristol Evening Post: ‘It looks as though Stephen will have an operation.

‘The surgeon who does most of the footballers’ ankles has been away and we’re waiting for him to come back.

‘As with anything if you are going to have an operation, you want the best person possible to perform it.

‘Stephen has had an injection in his ankle to see if that helps clear it up and the next step is surgery.’
