After it was revealed by Bristol City that Nicky Maynard would be for sale, Everton have stepped up their interest in the striker.

City were hoping that Maynard would sign a new deal with the club, but after months of wrangling a deal could not be reached.

So up step Everton who are desperate to add more firepower to their side and with 45 goals from 113 games in a struggling City side, he fits the bill.

So City would rather sell in January than get nothing for him in the summer.

Manager Derek McInnes told the club`s official website: ‘For some time now Nicky has had a very good offer on the table, showing the club’s ambition and our desire to secure his future with us beyond the end of this season.

‘Nicky has made it clear he does not wish to enter into any more discussions at this time.

‘As much as I would like to keep Nicky at the club beyond the end of this season, we are left in an unenviable situation.

‘We must protect the club and, therefore, we have no alternative but to seek offers for Nicky during the forthcoming January transfer window.’

Newcastle, Queens Park Rangers and Blackburn have all also been linked.
