Bristol City are leading the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur centre-half Bongani Khumalo, according to talkSPORT.

The 24-year-old moved to White Hart Lane in January before being loaned out to Preston North End.

Injury curtailed his spell at Deepdale but, with the defender nearing full fitness again, Spurs are willing to farm him out again.

Tottenham ambassador Gary Mabbutt – brother of former City striker Kevin – revealed: “We don’t have a reserve team at Spurs and this makes it difficult for our players to keep fit. So we depend on loans.

“Bongani is with us for pre-season preparations and a possible loan move will be looked at before the season starts.”

City hope to use their excellent working relationship with Spurs to tempt the South African to Ashton Gate, although his agent Glyn Binkin favours a move to Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers.

“At the moment, the player is focused on fully recovering and he should be back at full training by the end of this week,” Binkin said.

“He will be keen on the loan deal, because he wants to play football and gain the experience.

“I think it will be an excellent move [to Rangers] for him and we will just have to wait an see what happens.”
