Sexstone: Maynard not for sale

City chairman Colin Sexstone has issued a ‘hands off’ warning to clubs hoping to lure Nicky Maynard away from Ashton Gate.

The 24-year-old is currently on holiday considering a new two-year contract extension, with the delay fuelling speculation that an imminent sale may be on the horizon.

But, even though Maynard is out-of-contract this time next year, Sexstone insists the club are not open to offers.

“I have not taken a single phone call about Nicky and nor has our manager, Keith Millen,” the newly-appointed City chairman told the Bristol Evening Post.

“There is always going to be speculation about players like Nicky, but I can assure our supporters he is not for sale.

“He is our main goal-scorer and, as such, is an important part of what we are trying to build here. Despite what is being said in some sections of the media, we would not be willing sellers and it is totally wrong to suggest otherwise.

“As far as we are concerned, Nicky has a year to run on his contract and is going nowhere. We have offered him what we consider a very good contract and we remain confident he will sign it before the start of next season.”

Recent reports had led to rumours of Leicester City testing the Robins’ resolve, but Sexstone reiterated the clubs stance.

He added: “We are not in the business of selling our best players and we would certainly not sell to another Championship club.”

Maynard is due to report back at Ashton Gate on 1 July and is widely expected to accept the new terms on offer.
