Skuse Backed For Wing-Back Role

City gaffer Gary Johnson is backing Cole Skuse to play right-wing back ahead of Sheffield Wednesday’s visit on Saturday.

Utility-man Skuse has been in outstanding form in central midfield so far this season but lept off the bench after 19 minutes to deputise for Bradley Orr at Oakwell last weekend.

The local-lad was extremely unlucky to be ‘rotated’ for Barnsley but did his chances of regaining a starting berth no harm by putting in an exemplary shift in Orr’s absence.

Speaking to the Bristol Evening Post, Johnson said: “I reckon I could play Cole in just about any position and he would do a good job.

“He’s a very talented footballer and has that versatility you need to play a number of different roles.

“When Brad was injured, Skuse was the natural choice to fit into the right-back position and I thought he did very well in that role.

“He’s a decent defender and, because he is a natural athlete, he is able to go from box to box easily.

“Not only was he getting forward and posing a threat to Barnsley’s defence, he was also getting back quickly to cover when we did not have the ball.

“I’ll have no hesitation in playing him there again if I need to.”

With deputy right-wing back Christian Ribeiro also missing after picking up a knock playing for the Welsh Under-21 a fortnight ago, Skuse’s selection looks nailed on.
