City have ended speculation over the future of Ashton Gate by revealing a deal has been signed with supermarket giant Sainsbury’s.

As exclusively brought to you last week, Sainsbury’s are keen on moving their current store across Winterstoke Road to Ashton Gate after plans for a Tesco on the site had stalled.

The news comes as a huge boost for the club with Bristol City Council due to make a final decision on the new stadium next Thursday.

City Chief Executive Colin Sexstone said: “This is a win-win for the local community, for the club, as well as for Bristol as a whole.

“Moving Sainsbury’s across Winterstoke Road will help generate sufficient funds to build the new stadium.

“If Bristol is to benefit from a new stadium it is essential that we get best value for the existing site, and the board is unanimous that the agreement with Sainsbury’s delivers this.”

The Sainsbury’s deal is expected to be worth more than the £20m Tesco had offered for the site, with a further £10m coming from the development of new houses on the new plot at Ashton Vale.

Only yesterday town planners’s had given their recommendation for the development to go ahead and construction tenders for the new 30,000 all-seater have recently been issued.

What are your thoughts on the new stadium? Is it a good option that will guarantee the future of the club or due you think remaining at the Gate would be a more realistic alternative?
