It was our best victory of the season and it happened off the pitch. The green belt has turned into red belt.
The decision in principle to allow Bristol City to build their new stadium on green belt provided they can overcome a number of issues is fantastic news if you are a City fan.
Not so good apparently if you are a lover of wild life or live behind the stadium. I also sympathise with those whose loved one’s ashes are sprinkled at Ashton Gate who might one day have to visit them under the pet food aisle at Sainsburys. There is just so much to protest about!
I listened on the net to the council proceedings this time last week and decided I never want to be a councillor and would prefer to spend my spare time watching paint dry. They could have moved things much quicker if they had debated the green belt issue first.
In the end they seemed to push on to vote as they all wanted to go home as it had gone past their bed times.
One minute they were talking about the site having toxic waste issues and the next a haven for wildlife. The two did not seem to sit together for me.
I would have thought the birds would rather land on a pristine Ashton Vale pitch than a landfill site with toxic problems but then I am not a starling or a twitcher.
I know it’s more complex than that but the truth is wherever it is built there would be protests.
Imagine if the current ground was a land fill surrounded by houses and they wanted to build the stadium there. City would not get planning for a new build Ashton Gate these days.
The transport issue cannot be as bad as the current problems on match days.
There is still a long way to go with this proposal but if this is half time I feel, for once, the Robins are 2-0 up and that does not happen often enough.
