Andrius Velicka’s Bristol City career is over after a scan confirmed the Lithuanian striker has ruptured the anterior cruciate knee ligament in his right knee.

The 30-year old targetman only signed on at Ashton Gate on Monday afternoon and was used as a second half substitute on Tuesday night.

But, after only five minutes on the field, the big striker twisted awkwardly on his right knee before collapsing in agony.

Manager Gary Johnson told bcfc.co.uk: “We’re absolutely gutted for Andrius.

This was a new start for him with a season-long loan here in Bristol. He’d brought his family down and after five minutes of his first game for the club he suffers this injury.

It is a long road back, just ask Ribs or Jordan who have had the injury. It’s a terrible injury for a professional footballer.

Johnson confirmed that he would be looking at replacements for Velicka, but it could be that a door now opens for John Akinde following his impressive showing in the defeat of Palace last week.

The manager continued: “We’re back to square one as it were.

We’ll keep looking for that club for our golf bag, but we’ll do it as and when we can.”
