Bristol City boss Gary Johnson will not be trying to tempt former Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to Ashton Gate as money is a stumbling block.

The 30-year-old was released by the Scottish giants at the end of last season and speculation had it that Johnson was going to make an unlikely offer to the player to come and show his skills on the Ashton Gate turf.

But the Robins boss told the club’s official website: ‘The lad is a free agent but he’s also played at a high level and has made big money doing that. He’d have to take a three-quarter wage drop to come here.

‘The newspaper reports were the first we’d heard about any interest. There’s nothing in that one at all, he wasn’t on our radar.’
