New City boss Steve Coppell has spoken of his desire to see Nicky Maynard fire City to the Premiership next season.

With Wolves and West Brom rumoured to be sniffing around the prolific 23-year-old, Coppell insists the club is under no pressure to sell this summer.

Speaking to BBC Points West on his first day in the job, Coppell said: “I hope Nicky wants to stay and is hopeful of getting promotion with us next year so he can ply his trade in the top division.

“We won’t have to sell Nicky for financial reasons – that’s for sure.

“I don’t want him to leave and I would like to think he sees his future here with us.

“But if a big club comes in and gets in a player’s brain, that sort of pressure can be very difficult to withstand.”

Maynard was signed for a club record £2.25m in August 2008 and has two years left on his contract at Ashton Gate.

  • If the right offer came in, you’d sell alright. And one sniff of a bigger club being interested and the player will be off out of your rotbox of a stadium like a rocket.

  • Actually, he loves it here and has already spoken in public about his excitement at working with Coppell next season. A bid of £5m would be the starting point though…

  • Five million?????? Look, you were stupid to pay two and a quarter for him, and he is on high wages. 3 million would see a deal done.
