New City boss Steve Coppell has spoken of his desire to see Nicky Maynard fire City to the Premiership next season.

With Wolves and West Brom rumoured to be sniffing around the prolific 23-year-old, Coppell insists the club is under no pressure to sell this summer.

Speaking to BBC Points West on his first day in the job, Coppell said: “I hope Nicky wants to stay and is hopeful of getting promotion with us next year so he can ply his trade in the top division.

“We won’t have to sell Nicky for financial reasons – that’s for sure.

“I don’t want him to leave and I would like to think he sees his future here with us.

“But if a big club comes in and gets in a player’s brain, that sort of pressure can be very difficult to withstand.”

Maynard was signed for a club record £2.25m in August 2008 and has two years left on his contract at Ashton Gate.
