Number One – Jackie White

Jack ‘Jackie’ White was born in Doncaster , South Yorkshire on 17th. March 1924 and after leaving school , he worked in the coal mines of that area. Jack was playing Yorkshire League football and was soon spotted and signed by Aldershot. At this time Jack was a centre forward like his brother Len, who also was to enjoy a long career in league football, but Aldershot converted Jack to a half back during the 1950-51 season. The move helped his career and his clever, constructive play won him many admirers in the lower divisions.
Jack’s 209 league appearances and 24 goals for Aldershot
eventually drew the attention of City Manager Pat Beasley who signed him for £5,300 in October 1952.
Bristol City made Jack captain and played him at centre half where he was remarkably effective, his reading of the play more than compensating for his comparative lack of height (5’8′).
Jack was Captain and ever present in the all conquering City side who swept to the Third Division Championship with a record 70 points in 1954-55.He continued as a regular in the second division until, at the age of 34, leaving to become player manager of Cambridge City in March 1958.Jack had made 232 appearances for the Robins and had notched 11 goals.
