Bristol City set about trying to bring down Charlton with new head coach Lee Johnson sat in the stands looking on.

Johnson was named by the club as the new boss as time ticked down towards the start of the game and he witnessed a win by City thanks to a Lee Tomlin penalty.

Tomlin earned the penalty himself after 20 minutes when he went down in the box because of a push in the back from Johann Berg.

And as the home fans protested against their owners, Tomlin struck the spot kick home.

Tomlin again was in the action when he set up Luke Freeman who had two chances to get the ball into the net but Henderson was in no mood to be beaten again and saved both efforts.

Freeman then tried an audacious chip from a good 30 yards out only to see Henderson save once again.

Richard O’Donnell in the City goal had little to do all afternoon even though there were some bright sides to Charlton’s play.

Freeman was also denied when he tried a cheeky 30-yard chip which Henderson tipped over the crossbar.

Gudmundsson played an excellent through ball for Berdich to run onto but his shot hand no power and O’Donnell was able to save with ease.

Lookman looked to have got a diving header on target but his effort was deflected wide for a corner.

City’s defence held solid and Charlton grew increasingly frustrated, but at the other end, City’s attack continued to look for the second goal that would have put the game to bed.

Solly blocked an effort from Aaron Wilbraham but claims for another penalty were turned down by the referee.

But the Robins were rewarded with a free kick a little later but Freeman sent the ball over the bar.
