City Look to Plug Defensive Gaps

Bristol City today signed Andy Webster on loan from Glasgow Rangers until mid-January 2009. This comes after two defenders were lost to injury last week. Christian Ribeiro ruptured his cruciate ligament in the Carling Cup against Peterborough and on Saturday Jamie McCombe fractured his cheekbone when heading Derby County defender knee.

Andy Webster joined Rangers from Wigan, originally on loan in August last year and has yet to find the form that saw him feature in over 150 games for Hearts between 2001 and 2006. Born in Dundee the 6 foot defender played a handfull of games for Abroath before joining Hearts for £70,000 in March 2001. He played just three Premier League games in nine months at Wigan before joining Rangers.

Rangers manager Walter Smith told rangers.co.uk, ‘We have allowed Andy to go on loan to go to Bristol City until the January transfer window. We feel it will be beneficial for him to get regular football there and we hope he can return to the level we all know he is capable of. Andy has had a torrid time since he arrived at Rangers and it will be good for him to get games every week in another environment.’


City also give a trial to Darren Kenton a 29 year old central defender released by Leeds Utd this summer. He plays alongside Andy Webster for City Reserves against Forest Green Rovers in the Avon Insurance Combination fixture at the New Lawn tonight. Kenton has a 12 year career behind him and has played for Norwich City, Southampton and Leicester City before joining Leeds in January of this year.
