Bristol City finally secured their Championship status for another year while at the same time sending Coventry and Portsmouth down to league one.

Barnsley had not come to Ashton Gate just to make up the numbers though, they saw a lot of the ball in this encounter and for long periods looked the most likely side to score.

But City kept up the fight for survival and were rewarded with an opening goal in the first half for Cole Skuse.

That settled the nerves of the home side and there was a massive sense of relief when Jonathan Stead kept his cool to add the all important second goal from the penalty spot early in the second half.

From then on the home side dominated the game and could have added a couple more goals but Tykes keeper made two great saves from Stead and Neil Kilkenny as the Robins started to enjoy themselves.

The only surprise was at the final whistle is that City had not added a third goal.
