Sunderland defender Adam Matthews has been snapped up by Lee Johnson on an emergency loan until the end of the season.

The defender who has struggled to make the first team since joining the Black Cats from Celtic, so much so that he has only one appearance for the Wearside outfit to his name.

24 year old Welshman Matthews has not been able to find the form he was in while at Celtic where he was known as the Lionel Messi for the Scottish giants before his £2 million move south.

Johnson is more than happy with his signing, he told the clubs official website: “Adam Matthews has lost his way a bit since going to Sunderland but not long ago he was (Lionel) Messi for Celtic.

“He moved to Sunderland for £2m and hasn`t got in the team enough, so he`s keen to come here and prove himself.

“He`s quick with good technique. The risk and reward with any loan is how quickly you can get the player up to speed and get them integrated to the group.’
