24 year old Welshman Matthews has not been able to find the form he was in while at Celtic where he was known as the Lionel Messi for the Scottish giants before his £2 million move south.

Johnson is more than happy with his signing, he told the clubs official website: “Adam Matthews has lost his way a bit since going to Sunderland but not long ago he was (Lionel) Messi for Celtic.

“He moved to Sunderland for £2m and hasn`t got in the team enough, so he`s keen to come here and prove himself.

“He`s quick with good technique. The risk and reward with any loan is how quickly you can get the player up to speed and get them integrated to the group.’
