Bristol City manager Steve Cotterill praised his players after they managed to beat a dogged Crawley side to remain top of the table.

There is still a one point gap between the Robins and Swindon Town who currently occupy second place in league one.

Crawley came to Ashton Gate to make things difficult for the hosts and had City not stuck at their task, the visitors would have gone hope with the point they craved and that would have knocked City off the top spot.

Luke Ayling grabbed the all important goal three minutes from the end and Cotterill believed that the defender deserved his goal.

He told reporters: ‘I’m so proud of them. This week, they’ve put in the miles and they’ve got three wins. We deserved that win and we deserve to be top of the league.

‘We tried to start bright and quick. An early goal would have made it easier for us. I’ve thanked the lads in there for all their efforts for the football club.

‘Luke Ayling got stick before his goal at Barnsley. He’s a special boy and everyone is delighted for him.’
