Aaron Wilbraham, despite recently signing a new deal at Bristol City, completed his transfer to Bolton ahead of the Championship opening day victory over Barnsley.

He was joined by youngster Jonny Smith in leaving Ashton Gate.

Wilbraham, who has netted City an undisclosed fee, was due to spent this season with the Robins but after Bolton showed an interest it was decided it would be better all-round of the Trotters’ offer was accepted.

Lee Johnson didn’t want to lose Wilbraham, 37, but appreciates the veteran wanted to spend more time with his family, which this move would afford. The forward is also looking for more first team involved and that is likely to come his way at the Macron Stadium too.

“Aaron is joining Bolton after passing a medical. It`s difficult because we didn`t want to lose Aaron but it`s a fantastic deal that he has been offered by Bolton. He`s been away from his family when he`s lived in Bristol and this now gives him a chance to be back with his wife and daughter,’ Johnson told the Official Website. ‘It also gives him the opportunity to kick on with the playing side of his game, which he really wants. Obviously for us, we were talking about Aaron with non-playing responsibilities. Every player wants to play as high as he can and for as long as possible.’

Adding: ‘With the deal that is on offer from Bolton, the playing opportunities and the fact he can get home to his family, it was very difficult to stop him taking that and standing in his way. He moves on with our best wishes and we thank him for everything he did for this football club.’

Meanwhile, Smith will now have the chance to get some regular first team football under his belt to further his footballing development.

Having signed from Wrexham last summer Smith, 20, spending a short loan at Cheltenham last season, has joined National League side AFC Fylde on loan until January.

Brian Tinnion told the Official Website: ‘AFC Fylde is a very progressive club who train full time and have excellent facilities. We think this is a perfect opportunity for Jonny to continue his development as a player.’
