Colchester United have appointed former Bristol City boss John Ward as their new manager.

Ward takes the step up from assistant to Aid Boothroyd who left to take over at Coventry City.

Ward has managed York City, Bristol Rovers, Bristol City, Carlisle United and Cheltenham Town.

Colchester chairman Robbie Cowling told the club’s official website: ‘Promoting an assistant manager to the lead role is often seen as a cheap or safe option, but I can assure all Colchester fans that I have selected John because I truly believe he is the best candidate for the job.
