With the closure of the transfer window only hours away it now appears unlikely that City manager Gary Johnson will be able to add a striker to his squad, although bids remain on the table for James Hayter (Bournemouth) and Michael Reddy (Grimsby Town). There has been activity in an outward direction, however, with Steven Gillespie completing his move to Cheltenham Town for an undisclosed fee. City have also negotiated a sell on clause for the ex-Liverpool trainee.
Four other City players are waiting to see if they attract attention before the window closes.Clayton Fortune is likely to extend his loan spell at Port Vale until the end of the season, while Luke Wilkshire, Jamie Smith and Ryan Harley are all available for a temporary or permanent move. The biggest surprise would be a move for Australian international Wilkshire, but he has been unable to get back into the side since his injury in the win at Port Vale. Luke feels that a lack of first team football could hamper his chances of playing in the World Cup with Australia, whilst City are all too aware that the former Middlesborough player is out of contract at the end of the season and could walk away without a fee, a considerable loss for City who paid £250,000 for his services.
It could be an interesting evening and although my hunch is that the Clayton Fortune loan extension will be the only transaction, I hope that I am proved wrong.
