Bristol City now have permission to talk to Barnsley manager Lee Johnson regarding the vacant manager’s job at Ashton Gate.

The former City player is doing well at Oakwell, he has just steered the Tykes into the final of the Johnstones Paint Trophy at Wembley Stadium and was last month’s manager of the month for league one and his team have not lost a game since November.

The 34 year old took over the reigns at Barnsley around twelve months ago, but could not turn their bad fortunes around last season and they were relegated from the Championship.

Steve Cotterill was removed from his post last month and rumours have been rife about Johnson ever since, John Pemberton took over from Cotterill but despite making improvements to the playing staff, has so far been unable to stop the slide back into league one.

Barnsley announced via their official website earlier today: ‘This morning we gave permission to Lee Johnson to speak to Bristol City concerning their managerial vacancy.

‘This is because we believe that the structures that we now have in place must be the key to our future success rather than dependence on a single individual.

‘If Lee decides to stay with Barnsley Football Club we will be delighted, but if he chooses to move on, we will continue unabated with the plan we have in place for the progression of our club.’
