Vice-captain Jamie McCombe has come in for stinging criticism following his second half dismissal at Pride Park yesterday.

Skippering the side in Louis Carey’s absence, McCombe was booked twice in the space of three second-half minutes, having escaped punishment several times before in the game.

Up until McCombe’s red card, it was an even, open contest but Johnson was furious at the giant centre-back’s ill-discipline which handed the Rams the incentive to press on and claim the win.

“Over the years he’s been a real stalwart for us and that’s why he’s captain, but today he was petulant and unprofessional,” Johnson told bcfc.co.uk.

“He needed to keep his wits about him and not get involved in any petulance, but he did.

“We asked everyone to calm down but there’s no excuse for Jamie doing as he did there. It was petulant, stupid.

“That left us with our backs against the wall but he’s apologised because he’s a decent lad, but obviously he’s let his team-mates down today and he knows that.”

McCombe will only be banned for the one game, Tuesday’s night’s visit of in-form Blackpool, but hopefully Johnson will keep him on the sidelines for the foreseeable future.
