Derek McInnes had sympathy for the fans who were disappointed not to see a game at Ashton Gate on Boxing Day after the game was postponed at the last minute.

There was a torrential downpour of rain shortly before the 3 o’clock kick off time which left the pitch waterlogged.

Referee Michael Naylor made a quick inspection but it was clear that the game had to be called off.

It was disappointing for the crowd which was one of the biggest for some time at Ashton Gate and although McInnes had to agree with the referee’s decision, he still felt the frustration of not having the chance to get out of the bottom three.

He told the Bristol Post: ‘This was a game we had prepared well for and were looking forward to.

‘Traditionally, the Boxing Day fixture is one of the biggest of the season and I feel for the supporters.

‘The players will be ready to go again tomorrow, but a lot of people would have worked around their holidays to make sure they could be here.

‘They have turned up in good numbers and I’m disappointed for them more than anyone. Supporters want to see their team play during the holiday season and I understand their disappointment.’
