Bristol City manager Derek McInnes was not going to be putting referee James Linington on his Christmas card list after the 1-0 defeat by Middlesbrough.

City`s six game unbeaten run came to an end in injury time of this game when Boro sub Malaury Martin rifled home a free kick from 25 yards that gave David James no chance.

But by then the Robins could have been a goal ahead had they had a bit more attention paid to what was going on around them when Neil Kilkenny’s cross from the right was blocked by Julio Arca’s arm.

McInnes said: ‘We didn’t get the rub of the green over decisions.

‘I was too far away to assess our penalty appeal, but the reaction of the players suggests it was a handball.

‘We have to take it on the chin and set about another unbeaten run. There are acceptable ways to lose and this was one of those because the players gave everything. The way we are playing now to when I took over is like night and day. I have every faith in the players to quickly recover from this setback.’
