Chris Burke hit a couple of goals for Birmingham City as they beat the Robins 2-0 leaving them still without a win at Ashton Gate this season.

Burke opened the scoring on 35 minutes, meeting Jean Beausejour’s low cross with a clinical finish at the far post.

And the same player made sure of the points deep into injury time, breaking clear from what Bristol felt was an offside position to shoot through the legs of David James.

New manager Derek McInnes took the whole thing in as it was his first game in charge and he said after the game that there is something to be encouraged about in the way Bristol City play.

‘I couldn’t fault my lads for effort,’ said McInnes. ‘They have an appetite to get away from the bottom of the table and that is something to build on.

‘We may need a couple of fresh faces to strengthen an imbalanced squad, but I believe I have inherited a good group of players with the right attitude.

‘There wasn’t much in the game. I felt we should have had a second-half penalty when Stephen Carr clattered into Jon Stead and we missed some decent chances.

‘Maybe Birmingham showed a bit more guile than us in the final third and that is something we need to work on.’
