Bristol City manager Keith Millen is warning fans not to get too excited over the opening of the transfer window in January.

Millen had previously hinted that he would be looking to add a creative midfielder and a left-back next month, but knows that the entrance door to Ashton Gate will not have a pavement lined with gold.

In fact, the current financial climate suggests to Millen that there will be not a lot of shopping done in the Championship this time around.

“I think it could be the quietest January we’ve had since the transfer windows came into being,” said Millen, who has been told he must shed players before he can recruit.

“Clubs simply do not have the money available to pay transfer fees for players. Crowds are down, wages continue to rise and a lot of Championship clubs have announced big financial losses.

“There were not that many fees paid for players at our level in the summer and I think there will be even fewer next month.

“The recession is really kicking in now and clubs are being forced to cut their cloth accordingly.

“Some of the big Premier League teams will have money to spend, but those days are over for the rest of us.

“In the current climate, it’s a matter of wheeling and dealing and looking for the best price out there.”
