Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson did not just blame the sending off of Lee Tomlin as the only reason for his side’s defeat at the hands of Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Saturday.

By the time Tomlin was sent off for using his elbow on Greg Cunningham, Posh were already a goal behind thanks to a Paul Anderson diving header.

Grant McCann put the two sides level again from the penalty spot, but City exposed the weaknesses of a frail Peterborough defence in a second half that was dominated by the home side.

And by the time Dwight Gayle had added to his good scoring run in the final minute, Posh were out of the game.

‘I’m not going to blame the sending-off of Lee for our defeat. We cannot start games as poorly as that and expect to get anything,’ Ferguson told Sky Sports.

‘I don’t think Lee intentionally used his elbow on an opponent, but if you raise an arm you take a risk and we will now lose him for three games.

‘That is a big blow because he has been in good form. But Bristol started really brightly and it was the goals we conceded, rather than the red card, which cost us.’
