After the 2-1 defeat to Derby at Pride Park at the weekend, City manager Derek McInnes says that his team must accept they are now in a relegation battle.

Things had been looking good for a few weeks since the Scot took over at Ashton Gate but a defeat to Middlesbrough and another to Derby have set the alarm bells ringing again.

And McInnes believes that if his players get used to the idea of fighting to stave off relegation, the better they will get.

‘When you drop your standards from where we’ve been you suffer,’ he told the club’s < a href=>official website.

‘We’ve had a lot of plaudits, all of us, and rightly so. The players needed to feel good about themselves.

‘However, it only comes about from results and performances. The Derby game is an indication, for anyone who doesn’t think so, we are in a relegation battle.

‘They’ve got to work hard to pick up points. If anyone allows themselves to start believing we’re not (in a relegation battle) – be it supporters or players – then the Derby performance is an indication there’s still lots of work to be done.’
