Manager Lee Johnson has reflected on a ‘super September’ for Bristol City as we ended the month with victory over Ipswich Town.
Taking a three one victory at Portman Road to register our first win in 39 years (1978) with goals coming from Josh Brownhill, Famara Diedhiou and Bobby Reid, Bristol City took 14 points from a maximum 18 during the last calendar month and Johnson couldn’t have been more delighted with that.
Speaking to the Official Site as he met with the media for his post game press conference, the gaffer beamed.
‘I couldn`t be happier with the September we`ve had. If you had offered me 14 points at the start of the month I would have taken it. It`s been a great effort from everyone. We have to keep going and keep our feet on the ground. I think the international break comes at a good time for us now to recharge the batteries and go again in a fortnight`s time.’
With City taking a two nil lead before Ipswich hit their consolation, we added a third to see the game out.
‘I thought it was a fantastic performance from the players. We scored the early goal, but we`d already got in behind them a couple of times. The game plan was executed very well. I thought it was a great Championship game. There was a lot of physicality from both teams and a lot of good football from both teams.’
Johnson went on to say.
‘We definitely had the lion`s share of the first half, with our fluidity and our footballing prowess. In the second half we had to show some steel and some grit to stay in the game, eventually getting the third goal. I actually felt comfortable in that second half because I trust my players and feel we have a good energy and work rate.’
Johnson also had praise for the fans who made the trip, knowing that it had been an expensive month on that front.
‘I have to say thank you again to the supporters who made the journey. September has been an expensive month, so credit goes to them all. We know how much it costs to follow the team, with hotels, petrol and ticket costs all adding up. The support we`ve had has been exceptional and it really is beyond the call of duty, so thank you again.’
