City chairman Steve Lansdown has spoken out over plans to bring Old Firm duo Celtic and Rangers to the English league.
The Premier League is discussing the proposal in London today after Bolton chairman Phil Gartside floated the idea of a ‘Premiership Division 2’ a fortnight ago.
“I certainly feel it is of more benefit to Rangers and Celtic than it is to anyone else,” Lansdown told Scottish tabloid The Daily Record.
“In my opinion, there should be more focus being placed on how they can make Scottish football better.
“I’m pretty sure the other clubs in Scotland would be very unhappy if these plans were to come to anything.”
Gartside’s plan would have huge implications on club’s like ours at Championship level but has still been endorsed by Premiership manager’s Martin O’Neill, Alex McLeish and Harry Redknapp in recent weeks.
The Old Firm would require 14 of the 20 Premiership club’s vote to move south of the border.
“A club like ourselves is a bit in limbo,” Lansdown added.
“We do not have a Premiership pedigree because we have never been there but we are one of the clubs in contention to get there. If they brought EPL2 in we would be one of the borderline cases.
“I certainly feel it is of more benefit to Rangers and Celtic than it is to anyone else.”
I’m sure Lansdown won’t be the only Championship chairman against the idea.
