Bristol City’s summer signing David Clarkson says he felt the time was right to leave Motherwell for a new challenge.

The 23-year-old left for England when an undisclosed bid came in for the player and was accepted by the Fir Park outfit.

Clarkson also believes that the time is right for the SFA to have a good look at the state of the Scottish game at the moment with Brian Easton, James McCarthy and Steven Fletcher also joining English clubs this summer.

‘I felt it was the right time to leave Motherwell as I had been there for eight years,’ he told the Daily Record.

‘I loved my time there but I’m 23 and it was the right time and place to move on. There were other players who felt the same.

‘Nowadays there are more young players coming through and there are more Championship sides coming in for Scottish players.

‘Maybe it is something that has to be looked at.’
