New City manager Steve Coppell agrees that he should be working with a smaller squad this coming season, providing that what he has to work with are quality.

The last manager Gary Johnson had up to 32 players in his squad to work with, but could not get the best out of what he had for much of the time, this time around Coppell has been asked to reduce the squad to 24 or 25 players which will ease the wage bill at the club.

Coppell said: ‘I probably agree, if the 24 are good and committed.

‘Experience has shown me that if you are looking for two players, therefore you are looking to get rid of two players as well.

‘You have to have a squad of sufficient size where everyone is connected and you need a squad of sufficient size that if you do have a run of injuries it is big enough to cope.

‘I would say in an ideal world that a squad size of about 23 or 24 is about right.’
