Bristol City boss Derek McInnes was left fuming with referee Gavin Ward after he awarded a late penalty to Blackpool enabling them to get a draw from their trip to Ashton Gate on Saturday.
City had been given a late penalty themselves ten minutes before the Blackpool one, that upset Seasider’s manager Michael Appleton just as much and you have to say that both of the men in charge did have a point.
Albert Adomah was adjudged to have been brought down unfairly by keeper Matt Gilks after it looked like he had had run the ball out of play.
At the other end, Matthew Bates was desperately unlucky to concede an injury time spot-kick for handling a cross.
Substitute Steve Davies netted from the spot with a low shot for City, while Thomas Ince also found the net in injury time.
The result ended a seven-match losing run for City, but McInnes but he was still a long way away from being happy with the situation.
He told reporters: ‘I just don’t see how the referee could have been sure Matthew Bates handled. I have watched the incident five or six times and I still can’t tell whether it was a penalty.
‘My understanding is that officials have to be sure so I think we have been hard done by. I also felt there was a foul on one of our players in the build-up.
‘It hasn’t been an easy time for anyone associated with the club, but there were a lot of positives to take out of today’s game and it is something to build on.’
