Six players have been released by Bristol City manager Steve Cotterill this week, including legend Louis Carey.

Carey`s release brings to an end a long relationship of 19 years between himself and the club, in which time he has become the player who has made the most appearances for the club, racking up 646 games.

But at 37, Cotterill has decided that the player is now surplus to requirements as he tries to put together a team that will challenge for promotion the the Championship next season.

Also leaving Ashton Gate are Liam Fontaine, Marvin Eliott, Stephen Pearson as well as young players Mitch Brundle and Kevin Krans. On top of this, goalkeeper Elliott Parish has been placed on the transfer list.

More players who are likely not to be seen next season are loanees Simon Moore, Nyron Nosworthy, Wade Elliott, Simon Gillett, Tyrone Barnett and Martin Paterson, they have all returned to their parent clubs.

Going back to the Carey situation, there is a chance that he will be offered some sort of coaching role at the club.

Cotterill told the Bristol Post: “All four have been great servants to this football club and we wish them well.

“With Louis, we`ve had a good chat and it`s tough to be the one to end his Bristol City career. I know he has plenty of options – he could continue playing for another year or he may pursue a couple of other ideas he has.’

He added: “I`m delighted he got the all-time appearance record. That was always going to happen, I couldn`t let it go.

“For his tremendous years of service, he fully deserves that accolade and I can`t see it ever being broken.”
