Stead Feared City Deal Was Off

New Bristol City striker Jon Stead has spoken about how easy a decision it was to join the Robins, but feared that the deal might have been off at one time.

Stead finally put pen-to-paper on a deal that will cost the Ashton Gate outfit £225,000, but it was six weeks since City showed any interest in the player.

“I couldn’t make any decisions until I had all my options lined up,” Stead told the Bristol Evening Post..

“There were other clubs interested and I decided to take my time. I’ve moved about a bit too much in my career and I wanted to make sure I was coming to the right club. I didn’t want to rush into anything I might regret later.”

But when Steve Coppell walked out on the club, Stead feared that a move could have been dead in the water, but he was more than happy when Millen said that the interest was still there.

He added: “I was relieved and delighted when he told me how much he wanted me at the club.

“I thought it was dead in the water when Steve Coppell left and I thought I was going to have to look elsewhere. But Keith was still interested and, once we’d had a chat, it was an easy decision for me to make.”

Stead could be set for an instant return to Portman Road as City head for Ipswich on Saturday (3pm).
