Former Bristol City goalkeeper Tom Heaton has been called up by England despite his current side Burnley being relegated from the top flight.

Just two years ago, Heaton was part of the Bristol City side that was relegated into league one, he then found his feet at Burnley and ended up playing top flight football.

Heaton had a good season at Burnley when he first joined, he helped the club into the Premier League, but this season things have gone wrong.

But Roy Hodgson’s spies must have seen something good and after the call up, Heaton was asked how he felt: ‘It’s difficult to put into words,’ he said. ‘When the manager told me it was almost difficult to believe and then there was a euphoric flood of emotion.

‘It’s been a dream of mine since I was a little kid and pretty much everything since I started playing has been geared towards trying to get there.

‘Sometimes it’s difficult to see the wood for the trees when you got relegated, but it certainly feels a long way away from that feeling now.’
